Transiidikeskus boosts January-May volumes by 2.8%

Terminals of the Estonian transit operator Transiidikeskuse AS handled 1.1 million tons of goods and commodities in the first five months of the year 2016, 2.8% more than during the same period a year ago, reports LETA/BNS.

The general goods terminal of Transiidikeskuse AS handled 241,113 tons of piece goods and bulk goods during the five months, 37.9% more than in the same period in 2015, the company said in a press release.

The Muuga container terminal of Transiidikeskuse AS handled 80,139 units of 20-foot equivalent units (TEU) in the five months, 6.4% less than in 2015. The total weight of the goods shipped in containers decreased 4% year over year.

"In a comparison of May this year against last May, we saw a 3.5% increase [in container turnover]. This was the first positive month after a very long time. Likewise the growth in the volume of general goods remains positive, and even though it slowed down, we expect the total to increase by at least 50% in the full year. It comes as a result of very aggressive marketing," Transiidikeskus CEO Erik Laidvee said.

Despite the impact of the sanctions, the company continues to diversify its services to make up for the temporary reduction in east-west transit flows, the CEO said.

"At the beginning of the year we launched a container depot, which our customers have found useful. At the facility we offer maintenance that is necessary for containers. We are now expanding the list of services and capabilities of the depot and are seeking authorization to carry out also more complex repair works. In order to come out strong from the reduction in domestic demand in Russia, we intend to go on investing intensively in accordance with our action plan," Laidvee said.

Transiidikeskuse AS is an operator of specialized container and general goods terminals at Muuga Port.
