Sillamäe port wants more ship connections

The heads of the North Estonian Sillamäe Port hope that the tense relations between the European Union and Russia won't curb the development of the port since the port would gladly service a passenger shipping line between Estonia, Finland and Russia.

Sillamäe port marketing director Andrei Birov said that the Sillamäe-Ust-Luga ferry route to transport trucks and cars that was launched 1.5 years ago has been a success, which is why the international logistics company ULS-Global Group is mulling also passenger transport.

Birov said that instead of re-launching the Sillamäe-Kotka ship line that operated a few years ago, they should take a step forward. "Our dream is to have a triangle that connects Sillamäe, Kotka and Ust-Luga. It wouldn’t be important just for the town of Sillamäe and Ida-Virumaa, but for Estonia as a whole since it would create a new logistical bridge between Estonia, Finland and Russia."

Birov said that the occupancy rate of the Sillamäe-Ust-Luga route has kept improving although mainly the trucks and trailers are transported in one direction, from Sillamäe to Ust-Luga.
