Freight flows of Estonian Railways drop 16% in Q1

Altogether 3.9 million tons of freight was transported on the infrastructure of the state-owned Estonian railway infrastructure company Eesti Raudtee (Estonian Railways) in the first quarter of 2016, 16.4% less than in the same three-month period in 2015, informs LETA/BNS.

Of oil and oil products 1.94 million tons was shipped in the three months, 24.6% less than in the first quarter of 2015. Shipment of fertilizers dropped 13% to 0.87 million tons, Estonian Railways spokesperson Liina Hallik told BNS.

Oil shale shipments were unchanged from last year at 0.55 million tons.

Transit shipments fell 20.9% to 2.8 million tons and local shipments were off 8.2% at 0.69 million tons.

Import shipments meanwhile moved up 9% to 0.38 million tons. Export shipments were broadly unchanged from last year at 50,000 tons.

Container shipments declined 13% year on year to 11,157 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).
