Survey: Cruise passengers left in Tallinn an estimated amount of nearly EUR 30 million in retail revenue

According to a recent survey, done by the business research and economic advisors company G.P.Wild, cruise tourists in Tallinn spend on average €59.06 per person and are very satisfied with all aspects of their call. They highly appreciate the friendliness of residents, courtesy of store employees and the historical sites of the city.
According to Sirle Arro, Port of Tallinn’s Head of Marketing and Communication, the impact of cruise tourists’ purchases made in Tallinn this year can be estimated up to EUR 30 million. “More than half a million cruise passengers visited Tallinn this year. Taking into account that the average expenditure per passenger was EUR 59.06 we can estimate the total impact of cruise tourists’ purchases to be nearly EUR 30 million. And this doesn’t yet reflect the whole impact of cruise tourism on our economy as Estonia also benefits from revenue from port fees, pilotage dues, Maritime Administration fees and from duties paid to shipping agencies, travel agencies and bus companies,” noted Arro.

The expenditures by cruise passengers averaged €59.06 per passenger onshore visit including all categories. 54 per cent of the cruise passengers that went ashore purchased a shore excursion spending on it an average of €24.16 per passenger. Cruise tourists reported spending another €34.90 per passenger while ashore for other goods; local crafts, souvenirs, food, beverages and clothing being most popular.

“The survey showed that 70 per cent of passengers purchased local crafts and souvenirs at an average price of €16.80 per purchase. Another 60 per cent of the passengers made purchases of food and beverages with an average expenditure of €11.61 per purchase. 25 per cent of the passengers made purchases of clothing with an average expenditure of €25.29 per purchase,” described Arro.  

97 per cent of the cruise travellers surveyed said that their visit to Tallinn met or exceeded their expectations and were very satisfied with their overall visit with a mean score of 4.28. Cruise tourists value the courtesy of employees and friendliness of residents the most, giving each the highest mean scores of 4.33  and 4.27 respectively, with 86 per cent of the respondents being either extremely or very satisfied with them. Historic sites and museums received a mean score of 4.26 with 86 per cent stating that they were either extremely or very satisfied.

 


The survey included answers from 937 passengers who visited Tallinn in July, August or September. 38 per cent of them were from the United Kingdom, 26 per cent from Germany and 18 per cent from the United States. People from Australia, Canada and Italy were also represented.
The average cruise passenger surveyed was about 57 years of age with an average household income of €71,000.
The survey was conducted by the business research and economic advisors company G.P.Wild and ordered by Cruise Baltic, the association of cruise ports and destinations of the Baltic Sea. Surveys on the same topic are carried out by G.P.Wild every year.
