Siim Kallas: Rail Baltic in Top 5 EU Transport Projects

Siim Kallas, the European transport commissioner, said that the Rail Baltic project is one of the top five most important transport projects for the EU in the 2014 to 2020 period.

Speaking on ERR radio, Kallas, who is in Tallinn today, said that the probability of the project coming to life is increasing, having been only a pipe dream three years ago.

“We are in a place where it would be very hard to dislodge it from the agenda,” said Kallas, adding: “It is a question of cooperation between four or five states on how the legal and technical documents are handled, the dire work is still to be done.”

Miiko Peris, an adviser at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, confirmed that preparations are being made in all three Baltic states.

Peris added that the states should all have preliminary rail projects ready by 2015, and that would allow a more detailed technical project to be drawn up.

“The EU budget has set aside resources and it would be foolish not to use them,” said Peris.

Kallas added that the European Commission is waiting for an application for funding in 2014.

The application will be ready in 2014 and it should be jointly handed over by the three Baltic states and Poland, Peris said.
