Maritime Administration Picks Up Option on Second Ferry

The Maritime Administration have said they will order a second ferry from Baltic Workboats, after purchasing the first ship at the beginning of March.

The initial contract with the Saaremaa based shipyard, worth 9.4 million euros per vessel, had a clause for the option of a second ferry at the same conditions and price, the administration said in a press release on Monday.

The new vessels will carry up to 200 passengers, 22 cars and two trucks, and will be able to break through 45 cm of ice.

The boats will be delivered on May 1 and October 31 of 2015.

The European Regional Development Fund will pay for 90 percent of the cost of the ferry boats, which will service the Kihnu-mainland, Vormsi-mainland lines or the Sõru-Triigi line, which connects Hiiumaa and Saaremaa.
