Freight flows of Estonian Railways dropped by 6% in 8 months
Altogether eight million tons of freight was transported on the infrastructure of the state owned Estonian railway infrastructure company Estonian Railways in the first eight months of 2017, 5.9% less than in the same period last year, informs LETA/BNS.
In August 2017, 861,000 tons of goods was transported using the Estonian Railways infrastructure, 14.5% less than in August 2016, spokespeople for Estonian Railways said.
Fertilizers were the leading category of commodities in the first eight months of the year with 2.9 million tons, 7.3% more than in the same period last year. The shipment of oil products fell 36% year over year to 1.8 million tons. Oil shale carriage grew 17% to 1.4 million tons and the carriage of chemical products increased 3.5% to 746,000 tons.
Shipment of containers fell 11% on year to 21,220 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).
Transit shipments declined 13.6% to approximately five million tons. Local shipments meanwhile increased 25% to two million tons. Import shipments fell 14% to 814,000 tons, while export shipments grew 11% to 155,000 tons.
