Estonian Jan-Feb rail freight volumes drop 14.3%

Altogether 2.3 mln tons of freight was transported on the infrastructure of the state-owned Estonian railway infrastructure company Eesti Raudtee (Estonian Railways) in the first two months of 2017 or 14.3% less than in the same period a year ago, and 56% less shipments of oil and oil products were recorded during the period, reports LETA/BNS.

In February freight carriage totaled 1.04 mln tons, which is 10.9% less than in February 2016, Estonian Railways said.

Shipment of fertilizers during the two-month period grew 37% to 720,000 tons. The carriage of oil and oil products declined 56 % to 610,000 tons, while oil shale shipments increased 26% on year to 520,000 tons.

Transit shipments fell 27.8% to 1.37 mln tons and local shipments increased 29% to 660,000 tons. Import and export shipments meanwhile moved down 3.3% to 270,000 tons.

Altogether 12.52 mln tons of freight was transported on the infrastructure of Estonian Railways in 2016, 18.7% less than the year before.
