Estonia: Russian manufacturer of fertilizers starts building ammonia terminal in Sillamae

The Russian manufacturer of fertilizers EuroChem Group AG has started the construction of an ammonia terminal capable of handling a million tons of ammonia per year in the northeastern Estonian city of Sillamae, reported LETA/BNS.

The project has been said to cost 65 mln euros.

Marketing manager of Port of Sillamae Andrei Birov told that the construction works have started but could not give an estimate as to when the terminal might be completed.

The city government of Sillamae gave EuroChem the building permit for the terminal on March 1, and a statement of the start of the work has been entered into the state register of construction works on Nov. 17.

In spring, EuroChem CEO Dmitry Strezhnev told reporters in Moscow that the ammonia terminal will be built to supply a plant in Kingisepp, Russia that EuroChem plans to launch in the fourth quarter of this year. The projected capacity of the plant to be situated 25 kilometers from the Estonian-Russian border is 2,700 tons of urea and ammonia per day and the estimated construction cost is 660 million euros.

In addition to EuroChem, AS DBT, a subsidiary of the Russian chemical industry giant Akron, also operates in the Port of Sillamae. Similarly to the capacity of the terminal to be built by EuroChem, that of DBT is also 1 mln tons per year.

The liquid chemicals terminal at Sillamae is operated by the EuroChem subsidiary EuroChem Terminal Sillamae AS, which made a profit of 2.5 mln euros on sales 5.7 mln euros in the second to last financial year. The company employed on the average 26 people, and wage costs totaled 466,000 euros. The company has yet to submit its annual report for the previous year.

EuroChem has been operating in the Port of Sillamae since the end of 2006, when a 14-mln-euro chemical products terminal was opened there.
