Erik Laidvee becomes CEO of Estonian Railways

Erik Laidvee, former CEO of the Estonian transit company Transiidikeskus, is to start work as CEO of the state-owned railway operator AS Eesti Raudtee (Estonian Railways) on Monday, informed LETA/BNS.

Laidvee has studied to be a deck officer and has a degree in economics from the Tallinn University of Technology. This combination has created a strong basis for working as a manager in transit business where Laidvee has worked since 1992, including as CEO of Transiidikeskus for the past 21 years, Eesti Raudtee said.

According to Priit Rohumaa, chairman of the supervisory board of Eesti Raudtee, the company's new head has to establish good relations with state institutions. "Eesti Raudtee has several ongoing development projects that are important for Estonia and the funding of which depends on national decisions. Approving the investment plan can only work in cooperation with the state," he said. Rohumaa added that Laidvee is a strong leader who is expected to carry out active development operations as well as put in order the company's managing and procedural side.

Laidvee said that although the company is not earning a profit at present, the company has opportunities to do that in spite of Russia's restrictions. He added that the next step would be to also launch freight carriage in the North-South direction.

Eesti Raudtee's former CEO, Sulev Loo, assumed the post on Sept. 1, 2015 and resigned on Feb. 10.
